I need help. What year should we be in or shall we ignore the characters in the origional story?

Well, I have a character I'm developing for a story, but she exists early in Albus/Aberforth's lives and during Voldemort's first ride to power so I don't think that'd work well.

We could do it as if voldemort rise happens later. Like our characters are older than harry potter, who would most likely be in his 3rd year while we are in our 6th or 7th?
